'Landscape Surface', a talk by Julia Wright

We were very pleased to welcome textile and jewellery artist Julia Wright to our monthly meeting today at Harrogate Creative Stitchers. Julia describes herself as a prolific maker who is process led and is fascinated with tiny scales and close-up shapes, patterns and textures found in nature. She brought along many of her pieces to show us as well artwork and sketchbooks. Julia explained that she comes from a very creative family and trained at Edinburgh College of Art which gave her a good foundation in mixed medias. She went on to lead workshops for adults in the UK and Japan and is now a teacher in A Level Textiles and Art Foundation. Julia also regularly exhibits and sells her work which is often displayed alongside the found objects which have inspired her. As well as making, Julia spends a lot of her time drawing, collecting, photographing and observing nature and found objects in woodland, the coast and sometimes urban environments. ...

Saima Kaur: Embroideries from Punjab

We were delighted to welcome Saima Kaur to Harrogate Creative Stitchers this Saturday for a talk about traditional Phulkari embroideries. Phulkari is the folk embroidery of the Punjab, Northern India and includes flowers, motifs and geometrical shapes. Some of Saima’s collections are 70-100 years old. She loves telling stories and she started with a tale as a young woman visiting her grandmother in India when she was about to get married. Delighted with the good news, Saima's grandmother led her to a room in which sat a silver storage trunk containing her own mother’s treasured Phulkaris given to her as a wedding gift. Traditionally handed down through the generations, the brightly decorated textiles were to become part of Saima’s own wedding ceremony. CarolAnn J Allen: Mapping my Garden

From 'Mapping my Garden' It was a great afternoon at Harrogate Creative Stitchers this Saturday with a good attendance from our members as well as lots of newcomers. Today, we welcomed textile artist CarolAnn J Allen for her talk about her work which includes embroidery, shibori, community projects and most recently natural dyeing. CarolAnn is an artist and educator specialising in hand embroidery based in West Yorkshire. She teaches embroidery, stitched shibori, English paper-piecing and eco-printing. Her own practice explores the importance of slow textiles and visible mending, and stitch and traditional skills. She is also the Region 14 Coordinator for the Young Quilters Guild where she has been involved in the creation of quilts for Ukrainian refugees. She completed her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Surface Pattern and Textiles in 2010 from Bradford School of Art & Media.
