'Landscape Surface', a talk by Julia Wright

We were very pleased to welcome textile and jewellery artist Julia Wright to our monthly meeting today at Harrogate Creative Stitchers. Julia describes herself as a prolific maker who is process led and is fascinated with tiny scales and close-up shapes, patterns and textures found in nature. She brought along many of her pieces to show us as well artwork and sketchbooks. Julia explained that she comes from a very creative family and trained at Edinburgh College of Art which gave her a good foundation in mixed medias. She went on to lead workshops for adults in the UK and Japan and is now a teacher in A Level Textiles and Art Foundation. Julia also regularly exhibits and sells her work which is often displayed alongside the found objects which have inspired her. As well as making, Julia spends a lot of her time drawing, collecting, photographing and observing nature and found objects in woodland, the coast and sometimes urban environments. CarolAnn J Allen: Mapping my Garden

From 'Mapping my Garden' It was a great afternoon at Harrogate Creative Stitchers this Saturday with a good attendance from our members as well as lots of newcomers. Today, we welcomed textile artist CarolAnn J Allen for her talk about her work which includes embroidery, shibori, community projects and most recently natural dyeing. CarolAnn is an artist and educator specialising in hand embroidery based in West Yorkshire. She teaches embroidery, stitched shibori, English paper-piecing and eco-printing. Her own practice explores the importance of slow textiles and visible mending, and stitch and traditional skills. She is also the Region 14 Coordinator for the Young Quilters Guild where she has been involved in the creation of quilts for Ukrainian refugees. She completed her BA (Hons) in Contemporary Surface Pattern and Textiles in 2010 from Bradford School of Art & Media. Olga Prinku talk "Nature as my thread"

We all enjoyed a fantastic presentation by botanical and embroidery artist Olga Prinku at Harrogate Creative Stitchers today. Olga brought along her beautiful embroidered hoops using dried flowers as the ‘thread’ on a delicate tulle background and explained how her interest in this media has evolved in recent years. Olga’s work has gained a lot of interest as she pushes the boundaries in using these raw materials to create her designs and patterns, working with companies such as Anthropologie and 3.Paradis and exhibiting work at Crafts Council’s Collect 2023 exhibition. She is also author of "Dried Flower Embroidery". Originally from Moldova, Olga now lives in Yarm, North Yorkshire from which the landscape, flora and fauna inspire her work. She forages her own plant material; flowers, berries, foliage, grasses and seed heads; dries them out and incorporates in her work but she also likes to use already dried plant materials from other sources to increase the range
