A talk by Joan Murray entitled “Travels in Textiles”.

Another inspirational talk and presentation today at Harrogate Creative Stitches. Joan Murray brought many of her designs in textiles to show us her travels with textiles, as well as her journey and development of design through her career.

Joan grew up in Ireland in Portrush, and shared her love of textiles from a young age. She realised that everything has been designed, from sumptuous gowns to everyday cutlery, she showed us how to look at shapes and objects differently. Having studied in Belfast and the Royal College of Art in London, she travelled in Peru, Central Asia, and Tennessee, Joan developed a style in textiles that is truly beautiful.

She showed us projects that she worked on with the students during her teaching career. Her designs were shown as sculpting with silk, wool, cotton and other materials. From ancient Peruvian samples to offcuts from lingerie, she used her freedom to draw and paint and create beautiful garments one of which she wore to daughter’s wedding. We saw dresses and coats as well as woven materials she designed, often with the theme of exotic and tropical birds. Some of the projects she also worked on user theme of the silver cross, a Viking ship and also the versatility within garments. We were inspired to view the world around us differently, and see shapes and generally “an event of the thread”. Thank you Joan.
